Beyonce’s Shorts From Hell! http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/news/beyonces-shorts-from-hell/ http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/news/beyonces-shorts-from-hell/#comments Mon, 30 Aug 2010 09:27:47 +0000 wp-content/uploads/2010/08/beyonce_l.jpg anele http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/?p=4365 B has a gorgeous body, so imagine my shock when I laid eyes on this horrid fashion failure on News24.com.

Beyonce and hubby Jay-Z reportedly dropped into St. Tropez for a walk along the beach, with Beyonce wearing three prints – in one ensemble. Look very carefully ladies. This is how NOT to wear prints. Not only do the patterns clash, but the cut of the high-waisted shorts is terribly unforgiving for anyone with curves. And just in case you weren’t cringing already, B added a safari-come-grrrr bag to the mix.

Don’t worry B, it’s not you, it’s the shorts!

Ooooh… what do you think of B’s look?

It’s Bloomin’ Spring! http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/headline/its-bloomin-spring/ http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/headline/its-bloomin-spring/#comments Mon, 30 Aug 2010 09:15:03 +0000 wp-content/uploads/2010/08/bikini.jpg anele http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/?p=4355 It’s finally time to break out those flirty skirts, bright bikinis and that hot six pack you’ve worked on all winter.  The weather is warm and people have more desire to go out and of course, wear less. I dug into students’ minds to find out what really turns them on when the sunny weather calls for showing some skin. There was only one thing left to say – it’s about to get hot and sexy on campus!

“Bikinis, legs and cleavage! I can’t emphasise that any further,” says engineering student Claudio Fario. “The lesser the better – that’s my biggest turn on for spring.” If you plan on heading down to the beach then this one’s for you. No matter how big or small you are, a combination of a sexy bikini and a confident attitude will create massive amounts of sex appeal.

The same goes for the guys – so what if your six pack is looking more like a braai pack? Nothing says macho-hot than a self-assured man in nothing but his shorts. Be sure to get the right fitting size though, we really don’t want your clammies looking more like man leggings. “Sometimes, it’s ok for guys to let all hang,” giggles Masechaba Mbethe from the UJ Arts Centre. “Go ahead and rock those loose, low lying shorts, boys!”

Get into your feel good for spring but please by all means make sure the outfits suit both your personality and style. Go crazy and don’t hold back – like the saying goes – ‘If you feel good about yourself you look good to others’.

Global Student Entrepreneur Awards is back! http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/recommended/student-competition-supports-young-entrepreneurs/ http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/recommended/student-competition-supports-young-entrepreneurs/#comments Fri, 27 Aug 2010 14:50:58 +0000 wp-content/uploads/2010/09/GSEA.jpg anele http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/?p=4387 By: Anele Mdzikwa

Calling all young entrepreneurs – entries are open for this year’s Global Student Entrepreneurship Awards (GSEA), brought to you by the Entrepreneurs’ Organisation (EO).

A leading world-wide competition for undergraduate students, the GSEA inspire students to adopt entrepreneurial endeavors by bringing global visibility to student business owners who are innovative, profitable and socially responsible. Now in its 12th year, the GSEA has honoured outstanding undergraduates who juggle their studies and run their own businesses at the same time. “The goal of the GSEA is to build tomorrow’s leaders today. We offer them a network of professional advisors to support and guide them in growing an efficient business during and after college,” said Dean Lindal, vice president at EO Global.

Last year, South African Obedient Tshabalala represented Africa at the finals, held in the USA. “When I got a call from the EO in Canada, I became numb and I couldn’t carry the excitement within me, all I could do was to thank God, and scream,” says Obedient. With help from EO and Student Village, he was granted a visa for the trip. “We had sessions there to connect with various entrepreneurs in the world. Some owned more that 20 companies while some were making billions in a year.  It was great that all of them were willing to support student entrepreneurs,” he says.
“It was an unforgettable experience that helped improve my business model. I am now part of a prestigious community, the EO.”

To take part this year go to www.gsea.org/nominate. The closing date for entries is 1 October 2010.

Hit The Road With Converse! http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/recommended/hit-the-road-with-converse/ http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/recommended/hit-the-road-with-converse/#comments Thu, 26 Aug 2010 08:28:04 +0000 wp-content/uploads/2010/08/convers-150x122.jpg anele http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/?p=4319 Converse has kicked off its exciting, world-challenging campaign that seeks to encourage self-expression in young people & give a platform to up-and-coming artists to speak their mind!

It’s about celebrating the spirit of rebellion and originality. In partnership with popular radio station, 5FM and TV channels VuzuTV and Channel O, Converse will be going live with exciting on-air competitions that’ll definitely kick this campaign into another gear. The brand has also partnered with South Africa’s hottest pop culture magazine, One Small Seed. These partnerships cement the brand’s position as an advocate and catalyst for creativity. The campaign is designed to spark the next level of creativity.

It’s about what we do today that impacts the world in a positive way; getting Optimistic Rebels to go out there and do something to not only express themselves, but to also change their world for the better. Other than the en-vogue, über-cool social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, entrants can use Converse’s own dedicated website to spread the word.

They just need to let their mouse wander to www.optimisticrebels.co.za or click -through their mobile phones to m.optimisticrebels.co.za and upload 2-minute videos about how they make a difference in the world – to be considered for the fantastic cash prizes, PlayStation Portable consoles and cool Converse hampers. HIT THE ROAD WITH CONVERSE The streets are already buzzing about the brands’ national tour of South Africa. Converse devotees should look out as the brand hits the streets, malls and campuses with a LARGER THAN LIFE Converse Chuck Taylor – that is going to be the canvas for all Optimistic Rebels to spread their world-changing messages. This is where they get to write the cause that they feel passionate about. Writing a letter to their future selves.

The campaign culminates with all submitted entries being evaluated by a panel of judges and Converse making their dreams come true. The categories to be covered are: • Music & Dance • Art • Comedy • Life • Learn Winners will be presented with their prize at the final event in Johannesburg. The event will also be the grand showcase of all winners’ work . It is here that the revellers will be introduced to 5 new faces of Converse.

What’s refreshing is that the brand has consciously stayed away from big name artists and given the platform to soon-to-be-discovered talent. So, look out for: • Thabiso Lekuba – Music & Dance • Phaswane ‘Pass’ Motshana – Comedy • Sipho Lundonga – Hip Hop Beatboxer • Jacky Kwan Tai Ho – Parkour • Dave Curio – Graffiti artist THE LIFE OF THE PARTY Of course Converse is known the world over for hosting the best parties.

So, here’s a taste of what’s to come. There will be flash parties at very unexpected, underground venues throughout the country where South Africa’s best national and local DJs will be pumping the revellers with hot House, Hip Hop and other underground sounds all night long. South Africa’s fashion and nightlife elite will be there. The world is changing.

Don’t you think it’s time you joined the rebel movement?

Hollywood Cougars & Toy Boys http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/entertainment/hollywood-cougars-toy-boys/ http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/entertainment/hollywood-cougars-toy-boys/#comments Mon, 23 Aug 2010 09:13:37 +0000 wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Jesus_Luz_Madonna.jpg anele http://www.studentvillage.co.za/articles/?p=4288 It has become a full blown trend in Hollywood, both on-screen and off. Here are 5 of my favourite real-life cougar/toy boy couples.

Madonna & Jesus Luz

Age Difference: 28 years

Madonna, 51, is always one to take things to the extreme. She’s currently dating Jesus Luz, a Brazilian model who, at 23, is less than half her age. The duo met during a photoshoot for W magazine. According to the gossip mags this couple is constantly breaking up, getting back together, and all the while considering marriage and babies, so who knows what their current status is.

Demi Moore & Ashton Kutcher

Age Difference: 15 years

The queen of the Hollywood cougars, Demi, 47, married Ashton, 32, in 2005 after 2 years of dating. No one thought it would last; some even suspected their relationship was an elaborate prank for Kutcher’s show Punked. Hardly a hoax, they remain happily married five years later. Demi even goes by mrskutcher on Twitter! Now that’s love.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon

Age Difference: 11 years

Mariah, 40, and Nick, 29, first met in 2005, but didn’t start dating until March of 2008. Just six weeks later they were married on the beach in the Bahamas. In 2009 Nick told Oprah, “Age ain’t nothing but a number,” when she asked about their 11year age gap. Next up? A baby – at least if the rumours are true. There has been much speculation that Mariah is pregnant, but Nick told People magazine that while they do want children, if and when there is any baby news it will be up to his wife to announce it when she is ready.

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry

Age Difference: 9 years

Halle, 43, met Gabriel, 34, a Canadian model, in 2006 at a Versace photoshoot. Two years later she gave birth to their daughter Nahla. Sadly, in April 2010 the couple announced that they were splitting. The press speculated that their age difference was a major factor in the split. There have been murmurs of reconciliation though, so their story may not be over yet.

Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer

Age Difference: 9 Years

Jen, 41, and John, 32, first met at an Oscar party in 2008 and began dating soon after in April 2008. By August of the same year they had split. Jen gave John a second chance and they reunited only to break up again in March 2009.

Many believe the relationship failed because Jen was ready for marriage and kids while John wanted to enjoy the bachelor lifestyle. While neither opened up about those issues, Mayer did speak about one age related issue in their relationship
