Make money on holiday!

19 February 2010 No comments yet

We are slowly approaching the holidays! When they’ve wrapped up their work and you’re back at home, students become bored and often don’t have much to keep them busy.

This is however a great time to start organizing your CV and start applying for holiday jobs!

Like the festive season, Easter holidays are filled with so many activities, social events, family gatherings and these require one to be financially fit. As much as it is about getting the job, it’s also a good start for students to gain experience while still studying or deciding what career to choose.

In today’s working world experience is becoming more and more relevant and is crucial for many jobs. One might argue and say that this does not add value to one’s chosen career but it does count in a CV. The organization that you want to work for will see that you are a hard worker while you were still studying, and this contributes significantly to one’s character.

There are different jobs available for students. A great start would be getting involved in promotions, which pays fairly well. The wonderful part about doing promotions is that you get to interact with people. Getting the product you promote is one of the benefits about this job, because you get to keep what you are promoting.

If that is not enough reason to keep one on this job, there are other jobs available, such as data capturing or providing transcripts for market research companies. Students are unaware of the many opportunities that research companies have within their organisation. There are different jobs such as translating, transcribing and hosting a market research group. Market research pays really good rates which will be enough to keep one going through the holidays.

If you love children, there is always the option of being a baby-sitter. Although this will require one to have a drivers’ license, its a much safer option knowing you love kids and are able to look after them even if it’s for two hours. Getting paid for looking after kids is both fun and challenging.

If none of these jobs are for you, doing voluntary work in your communities is not such a bad idea. Although one does not usually get paid for doing community service, it does reflect positively on one’s CV.

There are a number of placement and recruitment agencies which help place students in jobs. Dial-a-student is one of them. It specializes in finding part-time employment for students.

Some of the jobs available at Dial-a-student include:
Admin work
Stocktaking
Waitressing
Promotions
Accounting

Nomusa Shabalala, student liaison officer at Dial-a-student, says “It’s good for students to earn extra cash during holidays. Some of them are even able to pay their school fees. Shabalala says students get good hourly rates which varies from job to job.
