Making new friends

1 February 2010 No comments yet

Varsity is a time when people actively seek out new friendships. Unless you live in a box, making friends should not be a problem.  It may require some effort and willingness to extend yourself at times. Especially when it’s your first time away from home. Follow these few steps to help you become more social and gain pals.

Hold back on the shyness. If you are shy, think of yourself as a successfully shy person. Relax, and go ahead and make the first move, you’d be surprised at who’s interested!

Go out. You won’t meet new people by staying indoors and being introverted. Test the waters by joining a student group or organization and make friends at the most happening parties!

Find common interest. Friends are usually formed when you share common ground. Find like-minded students and chat away.

Be sociable. Remember to relax and smile. Introduce yourself early in the conversation and avoid ‘yes’ and ‘no’ questions. Give open-ended questions that will allow conversation.

Form a study group. Round up a few class mates to study together. Study groups enable you get together, share notes and chat about class. Add some snacks and conversation, and you’ll have new friends before you know it.

Throw a party. Take time out to throw a party and inviting as many as people. This way, others can also meet and make new friends.

Feed back. If you find yourself getting along well with the person, offer to swop e-mail addresses or numbers and keep in touch with them. However, beware of your personal safety. Don’t be eager to give out your home address.

Be patient. Finding a best friend does not happen in a snap! It can take a while to get used to each other. Take it one step at a time.

Remember that with all the new people you’ll be meeting in varsity, don’t forget your old ones. They’ve been there longer. Make an effort to maintain the friendship by staying connected.
