Four New York University students have raised more than R1.5 million to start a new social network to rival Facebook.
The social network Diaspora gained popularity after a report by the New York Times last month – and 6 500 people have since made donations to the project. The four students – Daniel Grippi, Maxwell Salzberg, Raphael Sofaer and Ilya Zhitromirskiy – say they want to address some of Facebook’s controversial privacy measures.

The National Youth Development Agency and government has launched its Youth Month campaign – under the theme “Working together for Youth Development through action” – just days before the kick off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The NYDA has recruited 15 000 volunteers for the soccer showpiece, and called on Mzansi’s youth to rally behind the national team. The agency also announced that President Jacob Zuma will address the national Youth Day celebrations in Mpumalanga on the 16th of June.

Students are thinking of bringing firearms to campus for protection after students were robbed at gunpoint at the University of Johannesburg’s Bunting campus.
This week, two female students were robbed of their handbags on campus, and the incident has sparked outrage over the lack of security. Although security has been beefed-up for the upcoming World Cup, students feel they are still being targeted as victims of crime.

Pretoria University’s new vice-chancellor has vowed to empower women on campus.
Cheryl de le Rey told The Sunday Independent that her commitment to transformation comes in the wake of a recent report which revealed that women found it difficult to find jobs and grow in academic positions at the university.
Since her appointment – de le Rey has prioritised the university’s provision of opportunities for women and black academics. Pretoria University’s SRC chairperson Marias Alice says he feels proud that the university is in good hands.

The number of artisan graduates are who either unemployed or underemployed is increasing.
Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande blamed the mismatch between the aspirations of graduates and employment opportunities available to them.
The Minister has however promised to take personal responsibility for the acceleration of artisan training, as well as for the creation of a national register for artisans. Government also aims to combat the current artisan shortage by scaling up artisan training, with the assistance of the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Merseta).

Cabinet has approved a law that would create community service for legal graduates that will work along the lines of that of doctors.
Justice Minister Jeff Radebe announced to the National Assembly that the Legal Practice Bill will provide a way of reducing costs of justice to citizens. While the interpretation is that it would apply to new legal graduates, it appears it could also apply to lawyers who have been qualified for some time.
