I Don’t Know How She Does It
If your head is aching from last night’s pub crawl and your concentration level is at an all-time low, “I Don’t Know How She Does It” may be just the right hangover movie for you.
The big screen adaptation of Allison Pearson’s same-titled novel follows the life of Kate, a married, working mother of two. Oh, and Sarah Jessica Parker stars in the leading role. And that’s pretty much all there is to it.
Parker was introduced into living rooms across the globe when she landed the role of Carrie in the hugely popular Sex And The City. For six years, Parker played a career driven thirty-something with interesting but questionable taste in clothes...and men. Two spinoff movies and a handful of box-office flops later, it seems Parker has her Jimmy Choo’s stuck in the same mud.
As the movie begins, the audience is jolted into Kate’s life of bake sales, work meetings and so-nearly-there sex life. The rollercoaster continues into what one can only assume is supposed to be the climax of the movie: Kate gets a promotion as well as the temptation of cheating with her new boss.
Fans of Sex And The City may enjoy the film as a fictitious look into what life would have been like for a Carrie-with-children. For a more general audience, however, the story falls flat by failing to make any kind of statement.
The plot is not the only disappointment. Parker’s plays the same character as we have seen in all of her post-SATC projects, including Failure to Launch and The Family Stone: career-obsessed with relationship problems.
Parker herself is not tired, but her characters certainly are. Unless she decides to shake things up, it may only be a matter of time before her entire career falls asleep.
