Thank You For The Music The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway is uniting three of the greatest groups of all time, on one stage, to say Thank You For The Music from ABBA, the Bee Gees and Queen from 28 May to 14 July. These three bands impacted the world music scene with their monumental hits which remain ever popular, and this More... epic Barnyard production features all the greatest hits they made. This spectacular new show features songs from the days when ABBA lit up the music scene with their first hits Ring Ring and Waterloo. This was followed on with countless pop anthems such as Money, Money, Money; Dancing Queen; Voulez-Vous; Knowing Me, Knowing You; Mamma Mia; I Have a Dream; Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) and many more. The cast do an authentic impersonation of Barry Gibbs' falsetto as they go on to re-ignite the disco groove in Stayin’ Alive, Jive Talkin’, You Should Be Dancing, Night Fever, Tragedy and more. Bee Gees hits live on forever and this can be seen with How Deep Is Your Love, Massachusetts, I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You and New York Mining Disaster. Queen adds the electrifying flare to this show. They were a band that symbolised excessive and over-the-top showmanship, characterising the decadent 70’s and early 80’s. Queen was famous for their musical diversity, multi-layered arrangements and vocal harmonies. The talented Barnyard cast pulls this off to perfection, showcasing the hits Killer Queen, Somebody To Love, Don't Stop Me Now, among others. Thank You For The Music is slick and entertaining and features beautiful vocal harmonies and rocking anthems. Tickets are R140 per person from Wednesday to Saturday, with discounted specials of R105 per person every Tuesday night and R95 per person for the Sunday matinee show. For bookings and enquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 – 566 3045 or visit www.barnyardtheatres.co.za/gateway. Chow For Now - Kevin Perkins/Michael Naicker Kevin Perkins will be saying Chow For Now to his alter-ego, Michael Naicker, with this brand-new show at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway on 2 and 3 June. After 12 years of building one of the finest international South African stand-up comedy acts, Kevin Perkins is "retiring" his Michael Naicker More... character with a worldwide tour as only he can deliver. Chow For Now is a show full of old favourites, new material and some stuff his brain will create on the night, and will never repeat again. Thought provoking and hilarious, Kevin probes the subtleties of human existence and bludgeons the delicacies of acceptable etiquette with an "intellectual mallet". Re-creating himself as himself, Kevin says a fond "Chow for now!" to Mike, and an hilarious "Hello" to Kevin. Don't miss this comedy icon in his superb Mike Naicker anthology! 40-year-old Kevin is a born and bred Durbanite, who can add mechanical engineer and cancer survivor to his credentials before taking up comedy as a career in 2001. Since he grew up in Durban, it was inevitable that the Indian culture and humour would rub off on him. Kevin originally created the character of Michael Naicker for a competition at a popular Johannesburg comedy club, and that five minute set laid the foundation for one of South Africa’s most popular comedic figures. Today Michael Naicker has achieved a truly astounding popularity across many of South Africa’s diverse audiences, especially among Indian people, some of whom have even offered to adopt him. Michael Naicker, or “Super Mike” to his friends, is super-cool and quick-witted. “Iron Mike”, as he sees himself, thumbs his nose at acceptable norms, rebels against religious dogma and even Kevin admitted that the character has a life of his own saying, “I’ve created a monster!”. No-one could introduce Mike’s character as well as Kevin Perkins. “I always used to joke that Michael Naicker is the Indian counterpart to Michael Knight from that old TV show Knight Rider,” he explains. “The character I’ve created was born out of my life experiences. Mike Naicker is a working class Indian male. He loves fast cars, big sound systems, gambling, hot food and hot women. He fancies himself as a bit of a gangster and ladies’ man, and is very cocky and assertive. He loves nothing better than ‘sticking to the man’ and spends more than he should on modifications to his car. But, that’s the kind of guy he is – image is everything.” Kevin admits that, “Mike is a part of me and sometimes our relationship is really schizophrenic.” Don’t miss this chance to experience Kevin Perkins’ split personality! Tickets are R150 per person , and for bookings and enquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 – 566 3045 or visit www.barnyardtheatres.co.za/gateway. Blarney Brothers If you’re Irish, come into the parlour… Well, even if you’re not, get down to The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway on Monday, 17 June, for a special matinee Youth Day party with Durban’s legendary Irish band, the Blarney Brothers. With the Blarney Brothers you can be sure of a great big, foot-stomping, More... sing-along party. Perhaps it is just because they simply play for the audience, making music they know everyone will love. But, this is certainly helped along with a liberal flavouring of genuine Irish Blarney and humour, because the Blarney Brothers are as Irish as shamrock and poteen. Their music is a mixture of Irish ballads, foot-tapping pub songs, popular newies and the occasional Irish jig. Audiences can expect to hear a mix of favourites such as Running Bear, Drunken Sailor, Wild Rover, Jerusalem, I Am Your Music Man, The Leaving Of Liverpool, Simple Simon, Whiskey In The Jar, Danny Boy, Knees Up Mother Brown and Ireland’s Call. It is a tribute to their popularity that 31 years after their first performance at the Astra Hotel in Durban, they are still one of South Africa’s top five acts. In fact, their history goes back even further as they served their musical apprenticeship playing in the Irish showbands for ten years before arriving on South African soil. The Blarney Brothers established their enduring and endearing name by playing at "The Barn" at The Athlone Hotel, Durban every Wednesday and Friday for 13 years, so it seems like a fitting tribute to have them performing for the first time at The Barnyard. The band’s Paul and Damien McIlroy and Tony Fisher are all fine vocalists and very musically talented. Paul is the leader of the group, also playing the keyboards, banjo and guitar; Tony plays the fiddle, bass guitar, mandolin, penny whistle and flute; while Damien is on lead guitar and vocals. The theatre will open at 12h30, the show will start at 14h00, and tickets are R120 per person. For bookings and enquiries, phone The Barnyard Theatre on 031 – 566 3045, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.barnyardtheatres.co.za for more information.

80's vs 90's Pop Culture of the 80’s and 90’s is rampant in our lives today, but when it comes to music, which decade was the best? These two decades will determine this by undertaking a duel at The Barnyard Theatre at Gateway, when 80’s vs 90’s is staged from 27 August to 13 October. 80’s music was More... defined by big hair bands, heavy metal, and new wave music. There were a lot of great music figures that came out of this decade like Tina Turner, Madonna, Dire Straits, Michael Jackson who released Thriller in 1982, and Bruce Springsteen released Born In The USA in 1985 which became the best-selling albums of all time. MTV became the world's first music channel and popularized the music video with pop groups like The Eurythmics, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Alphaville, The Human League and Tears For Fears. Rock groups also made their mark in the 80’s, with outfits like Bon Jovi, Journey, INXS, Guns ‘N Roses and Toto. The 90’s saw the emergence of hip hop music with artists like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer, and the reggae giants UB40 continued their dominance. Grunge and alternative music gave us 90’s bands like Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Counting Crows, Oasis, REM and the Crash Test Dummies. But the 90’s also focused on pop music with artists like the Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Robbie Williams and the Backstreet Boys. Some of the greatest female icons also emerged in the 90’s such as Alanis Morissette, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Shania Twain. The challenge is on, and may the best decade win! 80’s vs 90’s is a hip, fun and trendy show that features the best of two decades colliding into one awesome show. It doesn’t matter if you’re a 80’s or 90’s fan, you are bound to get rocked, strung out on nostalgia, dance until you drop, and sing out loud and proud for the decade you love most! Tickets are R140 per person from Wednesday to Saturday, with discounted specials of R105 per person every Tuesday night and R95 per person for the Sunday matinee show.
