FNB Varsity cup, presented by Steinhoff international is in full swing

The season now is now in its 5th year and so far all the teams from the Cape have won the cup. This year, the teams are introduced to the new scoring system which looks to encourage attacking rugby. Conversions will be worth 3 points and drop goals and penalties worth 2.

Last year the University of Pretoria (Tuks) hosted the finals and got beaten by the mighty University of Cape Town (UCT).This year’s favourites are yet to be discovered as giants collide every Monday.

Rugby always comes with its own unique atmosphere. The best feeling a rugby fan can experience is playing in front of a packed stadium with lots of enthusiasm from supporters. Sometimes this can also be the worst experience. Student supporters can be very unforgiving to a missed tackle and are not afraid to show their true feelings in a range of colourful words.

Going insane and seeing the unusual is not uncommon at the Varsity Cup. According to Tendai former UJ rugby player “the craziest thing that one fan did was to run onto the rugby field completely naked while a varsity game was in progress last year”. Varsity Cup rugby has also created some interesting characters such as Prof Grooboom from UCT and Oscar "The Sheriff" from UJ. Rivals and promoters of their team.

Each year fans have a sense of anticipation, anxiety and suspense that often grips them whenever the cup reaches the finals.
This year fans will be treated to another Varsity Cup spectacle as teams battle it out every week.

The question now is who has what it takes to end the Cape’s complete dominion since its beginning in 2008?
