Getting fit on a budget
With temperatures soaring, the urge to go to varsity in a bikini is tempting. It’s hot, and the guys won’t complain. It is also that time of year when your varsity pool turns into a meat market, and the only thing stopping you from joining in, is the extra insulation you put on during winter.
Summer is here and it is time to shed the extra kilos. Here is how to do so on a budget.
The problem is that joining a gym or buying equipment is expensive. So how do you build muscle, tone up and lose fat without spending cash?
1. Join a running club.
This is an obvious one. Did you know that you can burn over 600 calories with an 8km run? If you are one of those people who hate running, then to make this free workout more interesting Student Village recommends the following.
Run with a buddy: This will give you someone to chat with during your run, provided you can breathe, and also force you to challenge each other.
Join a running group or time trial: Running with a whole bunch of people gives you extra motivation to not come last and to improve on your time week after week.
There are 5km and 8km Trial runs leaving from Wanderers Sports Club Johannesburg every Thursday at 5:45.

2. A Money Saving Workout
Perform these as a circuit, going from the first exercise to the last with minimal rest. Try repeating the circuit 3 times.
1. 25-50 Jumping Jacks, or 30-60 seconds of any other cardio
2. 10-15 Repetitions of a Push-Up Variation
3. 25-50 Jumping Jacks, or 30-60 seconds of any other cardio
4. 10-15 Repetitions of a Squat Variation
5. 25-50 Jumping Jacks, or 30-60 seconds of any other cardio
6. 10-15 Repetitions of a Plank or Crunch Exercise
3. Throw a dance dance party
This one you can do in the privacy of your own room. Put on your favourite song and dance. Don’t stop moving and try dance through as many songs as you can. If you connected to the internet there are thousands of videos you which will show you dance routines that are guaranteed to get the heart pumping. Best part, is next time you at the club, you can do your work out on the dance floor and look pretty awesome at the same time. Finally here is a reason to take your boyfriends Xbox away from him.
