Show shyness the door
Entering university is tougher when you suffer from shyness. All of a sudden making friends become harder, going out becomes distressing and even asking for help is a daunting task.
Student Village got some advice from UCT’s Psychology Department on how one can overcome shyness at varsity.
If students are experiencing shyness in giving a presentation or approaching a lecturer for help, then they should write out and prepare what they want to say or ask a friend to go with them. Simple breathing exercises herbal teas or tablets can also help in calming the nerves.
By building up confidence, shyness can be conquered. Avoid situations where your shyness is exposed. Rather do things you are confident in, and slowly move forward, with confidence, from there.
